SUGGESTED CARE & MAINTENANCE FOR YOUR TEAK OUTDOOR FURNITURE

CLEANING YOUR TEAK FURNITURE

Cleaning your teak furniture can be as simple as hosing it off with just plain water from a garden hose, once a week, to remove dirt and debris.  If the furniture is heavily soiled, you may want to clean it with a simple non-abrasive soap and water mixture.  If you want to maintain the silver patina  on your furniture, use a soft sponge.  If you wish to clean up or remove the silver patina, use the following procedure:  With a Scotch Brite® sponge and Simple Green cleaner, lightly scrub the surface, going "with the grain of the wood" and hose it off.  We do not recommend covering your teak furniture with covers of any kind.  The covers tend to trap the moisture and do not let the furniture breathe, promoting the growth of mildew on your furniture.

MOLD/MILDEW REMOVAL

Mold and mildew may feed on dirt and other foreign substances which are not periodically cleaned from your furniture.
To remove mold or mildew, prepare a solution of 1 part Clorox Bleach and 2 parts water.  You can apply this solution using a 3 gallon capacity garden sprayer.  Spray the furniture and allow the solution to soak in for approximately 15 minutes.  The bleach is what actually kills the mold.Keep the furniture wet with the bleach/water solution during this process.  Once you have sprayed on the bleach/water solution, it is very important you do not touch the furniture until  you have hosed it off thoroughly with water and allowed it to dry in the sun. When you hose off the bleach/water solution, just let the water flow from the garden hose without using any kind of pressure nozzle.  This process should not be done over any surface which cannot tolerate exposure to bleach, such as your grass, wood or tile deck, flagstone patio, poolside...etc.

ADJUSTMENTS

If your furniture has any moving parts/hardware, we suggest that you periodically tighten them.  It is normal for hardware to loosen a bit with continued use.

OILING/SEALING YOUR FURNITURE

Oiling/sealing does not prolong the life of your teak furniture.  Instead it simply helps to maintain the rich golden brown color and deters the natural graying process.
To oil/seal your furniture, we recommend using SIKKENS Cetol® 1. It comes in different tints, from Natural (clear) to Ebony (dark).
